A post from the “Gwinnett Braves Bible” Blog

If you think the weather has been hot lately, try being Freddie Freeman’s bat these days.

The G-Braves swept the Lehigh Valley Iron pigs on Sunday afternoon behind the solid pitching of Brandon Beachy and Gwinnett’s bullpen, and Freeman’s offensive outburst 5-2 in Allentown, Pa.

G-Braves starter Brandon Beachy had another solid start, going 7 innings while giving up 3 hits, 2ER, with 2 Ks. He got a no decision.

Lefty Lee Hyde pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning for the win (1-1) and Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless tenth inning for his 17th save.

But the day and the series belonged to 1B Freddie Freeman, who has gone beyond hot over the last two months.  For the month of June, Freeman’s average was .318, for July it was .333, and so far in August, Freeman is hitting at a torrid .458.

That’s right, .458.

On Sunday, Freeman went 2-5 with 2RBIs, giving him 71 RBIs on the season. He drove in catcher J C Boscan, who himself is having a productive season, with a single in the tenth inning for the go ahead run for Gwinnett.

Allow me just for a moment to get back up on my soapbox and raise the question if Freeman should be up in Atlanta.

It’s clear to anyone who has seen Freddie play in person over the last few months to see that he’s no longer being challenged by Triple-A pitchers.

And yes I know that Glaus had three RBIs for the Braves over the weekend against the Giants.

But right now, as a fan and using some common sense, who would you rather have, a incredibly hot hitting first baseman who is your future(next season) who can also play great defense, or a veteran who is playing hurt and not able to do the things he was doing earlier in the year.

I know the Braves, and their answer is to play Glaus, and bring Freddie up in September.

I think that the future should be now in Atlanta.

EXTRA POINTS- Former G-Braves Mike Minor makes his major league debut tonight against Houston. The G-Braves open a four game series tonight against the Rochester Red Wings. LHP Scott Diamond is schedule to pitch for the Braves (1-0, 3.27 ERA). The Red Wings have yet to announce a starter. Gwinnett returns home on Friday to face the Durham Bulls.
